Consultant's toolbox: solution-focused question sequences

A quick Friday summary for your reference pleasure:

  • on a scale of 1 to 10, where 10 is exactly where you want to be and 0 is the worst you can imagine, where do things stand with you now?
  • why isn’t it worse? what are you doing that keeps you at (level they’re at)?
  • between now and (a point in the future close enough to relate to), where do you want to go?
  • how will you know when you get there? what will it feel like?
  • what’s one single thing you can do between now and (X) that will move things in that direction?

The overall mindset to carry with these is one of curiousity, non-judgment, and trust that your client or counterpart is the expert on what they actually want. You’re just a guide with good questions.
